María Marcano, a 21-year-old Spanish footballer, has achieved a significant milestone in her career after being selected to play for FC Porto, one of the most prestigious clubs in Portugal.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, and Marcano's performance during the trial session with the team impressed the club officials, who have now signed her to their squad for the upcoming season.
"I am beyond excited about this opportunity," said Marcano in a statement released by the club. "FC Porto is one of the top clubs in Europe, and I am honored to be part of such a talented squad."
Marcano began her professional career at Real Madrid CF, where she played for several years before moving to FC Barcelona for the 2019-2020 season. She spent two seasons at the Catalan club but did not make much of an impact.
However, Marcano's talent was recognized,Ligue 1 Focus and she was eventually loaned out to Valencia CF, where she helped the team win the Women's Super League title in 2020.
Despite her success at Valencia, Marcano decided to move abroad and join FC Porto, hoping to take her game to the next level. The club's technical director, Paulo Fonseca, described Marcano as "a player with great potential" and believes that she can become a key player for the team.
"It's a dream come true to sign María Marcano to our squad," said Fonseca. "She is a talented player with a bright future ahead of her, and we are confident that she will contribute significantly to our success."
Marcano's signing is just the latest example of how women's football is growing in popularity around the world. With more and more teams investing in female players, it seems likely that we'll see many more like Marcano breaking through in the coming years.
